MP Steve Barclay called together farmers, drainage board members, county and district council representatives and interested parties to discuss water management in the Fens.

“Despite the problems elsewhere, the Fens have coped well in recent months with the high levels of rain and the risk of flooding,” he said.

“It is important however those lessons are learned from what has happened in other parts of the country. The summit was a positive step forward in ensuring that due attention is given by key bodies and decision makers to the very real issues which affect flood-prone areas like ours. “

The MP said the key priorities for the Fens were discussed namely the importance of maintenance work on our flood defences, strengthening ties between the Environment Agency and Internal Drainage Boards “ and how we can ensure that Fenland receives adequate funding to deal with any flooding.

“Following flooding elsewhere it is natural that attention is focused on those areas. “However, it is important that this is not to the detriment of areas like ours, where the impact of flooding on residents and the local economy should not be underestimated.”

He said that Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Owen Paterson, is due to visit Whittlesey in the near future.
