A paramedic based at Ely ambulance station has been suspended following allegations of sexual assault.

Colin Hakin, 51, of Grimshoe Road, Downham Market, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on March 12 to face allegations of four counts of sexual assault relating to three complainants.

The assaults are alleged to have taken place over a period of two years.

Hakin appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on March 4 for a preliminary hearing and will appear at Cambridge Crown Court on May 23 for a plea and case management hearing, ahead of a trial.

In the meantime, Hakin has been suspended from his post by the East of England Ambulance Service, pending the outcome of an investigation.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “A member of staff is currently suspended while an internal investigation is carried out.”

Hakin had been based at Ely ambulance station, in Newnham Street.

The 51-year-old is also due to appear before the Health and Care Professions Council on March 31 for an interim order application which could see him barred from working as a medical professional.

A spokesman for the council confirmed that an investigation was under way into the allegations.
