The Ely Speed Watch team clocked 47 speeding cars in November.

The team were deployed in Ely across November on nine different dates, clocking more than 2,300 vehicles.

Sergeant Phil Priestley said: “The difference between 30mph and 40mph in a pedestrian collision is very simple.

“At 30mph the pedestrian has a fifty-fifty chance of survival. At 40mph there is a 90 per cent chance that they will be killed outright.”

In November, Speed Watch volunteers clocked cars travelling up to 44mph on three separate days. The vehicle details are recorded and passed to police for further action to be taken.

“Drivers who are exceeding a 30mph speed limit by 14mph can expect us to be getting in touch with them,” added Sgt Priestley.

“Cambridgeshire Constabulary wants to extend our thanks to the recently established Speed Watch team in Ely.

“They are doing excellent work to help us to keep our roads safe, and keep constables available for other priority issues at the same time.”

  • 47 in a month! Beat that in a day in Downham, and probably in most villages.
