Road signs have been erected in Ely encouraging drivers to use the new bypass after a county councillor campaigned for traffic reduction in villages.

Cllr Bill Hunt, who is vice chairman on the highways committee on Cambridgeshire County Council, asked for signs to be placed at the roadside at “decision points” approaching Ely.

Bold yellow signs alerting drivers to the bypass being open were installed at Fordham bypass, Witcham Toll and Ely northern bypass on October 25.

It follows Cllr Hunt’s work towards reducing traffic – particularly HCVs – on the A1123 between Soham and Earith.

The recent opening of the Ely Southern bypass is expected to lead to a reduction in traffic by using the A1123.

Currently the A1123 near Wicken is closed for major works and Cllr Hunt hopes that this short term blockage will get drivers into the habit of avoiding Stretham and Wicken.

“The big reduction in village traffic will happen when the 22 mile £1.5 billion A14 upgrade opens in 2020,” he said.
