The Flying Scotsman has reportedly broken down in Peterborough on its way to Ely this evening.
The world-famous steam locomotive was due to arrive in East Cambridgeshire at 5.30pm but will no longer stop in Ely as it has “developed a fault,” according to Abellio Greater Anglia.
Cambridgeshire British Transport Police tweeted: “#FlyingScotsman update is that it won’t go beyond #Pboro due to a failure; happily no trespassers reported from the crowds that did gather.”
The news will come as a disappointment to many steam fans who have been lining the locomotive’s route in an attempt to capture a rare glimpse at it.
The passengers due to travel on the service are still completing the journey but will be pulled by a diesel locomotive. All customers are being contacted.
