John was born in Ely and raised in Littleport, and describes himself as a professional nomad having lived in half a dozen countries and worked in many more.

He says he never forgets his roots and has included many local references in a novel which is tipped to become a best seller.

The story begins in Mepal near Ely, travels to Cambridge, Australia then returns to Cambridge, Mepal and Ely.

There are many places and people that local folks will recognise and remember, he said.

The book is described by the publisher as touching, filled with drama and emotion, a gripping adventure, full of twists and turns that will hold the reader’s attention to the last page.

John says the best opinions come from readers who have given it five stars.

Often asked if it’s a true story, John answers. “It’s fiction based on a huge amount of fact which took more than seven years to research.

Based on true events, real people and places. It’s the story of a small boy who is separated from his mother in 1943, it follows the amazing events of his childhood to becoming a young man and his efforts to find his mother.

• John Taylor will be signing books on Thursday December 14 from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm in the bookshop at Wood Green Animal Charity in Ely. Profits will go to the charity.
