Proposals to demolish the former Ogden’s indoor market in Acre Road, March, ahead of longer term re-development have been put to Fenland Council.

The land is owned by Owen Kirk of Dublin – the founder of house builders Cannon Kirk- who believes the entire area “has significant potential for enhancement and could deliver an important riverside link”.

He wants to moth ball the site pending the outcome of the ongoing town plan but says at the moment it “makes a negative contribution to the character of the area”.

Mr Kirk hopes that by demolishing the buildings and fencing it off, it will secure the site against anti social behaviour “whilst not compromising its likely future contribution to the wider regeneration of the area. There is a strong local will to see this site secured.”

At one point he had considered using the area as a temporary additional car park for the town but this had been discounted on economic and safety grounds.

The scheme envisages using a hoarding to promote the emerging March neighbourhood plan “providing a canvas for a mural to explore the aspirations of the towns for its regeneration and in particular to engage with the younger members of the community”.

One downside will be the removal of an “informal” route from High Street to City Road but this is neither a recognised route nor an existing right of way.

Mr Kirk hopes his plans will make a positive impact on the area for reducing crime and anti social behaviour.

“It also offers an opportunity for a dynamic vista to be created through the development of a community mural,” he says.

Historic cottages nearby will be unaffected.
