Two men have been charged with assault police officers with intent to resist arrest following an altercation in Ely in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers were patrolling the city centre as the pubs and clubs were closing at about 2am when they were called to deal with a group of four men who were allegedly causing a disturbance.

Sgt Will Davis said: “Police were called to deal with four drunk males causing problems in Ely city centre. During the incident the males assaulted both officers.

“The officers managed to detain two of the group but the other two are currently at large. Both officers sustained relatively minor injuries and continued to work the remainder of their shift.”

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary added that the two men, aged 22 and 21, were charged with assault with intent to resist arrest and a public order offence.

The pair, from the Ely area, were bailed to attend Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on February 24.

Sgt Davis added: “We are now looking to speak to two other males. As ever, please call 101 and quote this post if you have any information that may assist.”
