Council reject proposals that would have awarded an extra £500 a year to the Mayor of Wisbech

Councillors threw out proposals by a sub committee that would have seen the Mayor of Wisbech get a 16 per cent rise on their annual allowance.

Wisbech Town Council rejected the idea on Monday which had been proposed by council leader David Oliver at a recent civic amenities committee.

The annual allowance paid to the incoming mayor in May will now stay fixed at £3,100.

Councillor Steve Tierney, who was not present for the meeting, said on Twitter that the vote was “completely unwhipped and discarded. Good decision I think”.

The amenities committee, which had been attended by both the present mayor Councillor Sam Hoy and the incoming mayor Councillor Michael Hill, met in January to discuss the allowance.

Cllr Oliver proposed the increase, which was seconded by Labour councillor Reg Mee, “to take into account increased travelling expenses”.
