Great turnout at patriotic concert in memory of local soldiers

An audience of 150 filled Ely College as The City of Ely Military Band gave a patriotic concert in memory of local soldiers who gave their lives in the First World War.

Joined by The Isle Singers, the concert featured music of the British Isles including marches and orchestral pieces by Eric Coates, Franz von Suppe, Henry Wood and John Ansell.

A traditional flag waving prom ending ensured a good time was had by children and adults alike.

Phil Green, musical director, said: “It went extremely well and we had a great turnout.

“There were about 150 paying guests and we also had The Isle Singers upfront who embellished the concert by singing.

“All the flags were waving by the end and it was a pleasure to welcome the mayor and mayoress of Ely, and the former mayor.

“A good time was had by all and we would like to thank everybody that took part and put a lot of effort into making it a great event.”

The City of Ely Military Band return to Ely College for their annual Christmas concert on Sunday December 16 and Mayor of Ely, Councillor Mike Rouse, said: “Let’s fill the hall (not just with boughs of holly).”
