A group of 30 students from Ely College turned their hand to entrepreneurship at the weekend as they took part in the Citrus Saturday initiative.

The students set up lemonade stands across Ely on Saturday to get experience of starting up their own business – and they managed to turn a healthy profit on their first day behind the tills.

The teams were supervised by teacher Lucy Beadles and other members of staff from Ely College, who have run a series of workshops during their business lessons on everything from basic business management to food hygiene.

The students were provided with funding to buy fruit and materials for the day by University College London – which masterminded the UK wide initiative.

Ely College teacher Lucy Beadles, who organised Citrus Saturday, said: “Citrus Saturday went really well despite the rain in the morning. We sold in excess of 300 lemonade netting the students a fine profit.

“The students really enjoyed it, some turning up at 7.30am and staying all day to develop their sales skills. They really made me very proud.”
