A local transport firm which employs 180 staff, and recently invested £3million into expansion, aims to win new business on the strength of achieving a prestigious British Retail Consortium (BRC) accreditation.

Brett’s Transport, based at Guyhirn, near Wisbech, has earned the BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution after months of hard work and investment.

Operations director Peter Jackson said: “We are proud of this achievement which has taken the commitment of everyone within the business.

“BRC accreditation demonstrates that we are operating at the highest and most rigorously controlled standards within our industry.

“We join a select number of businesses in the warehousing and distribution business to have this standard. It demonstrates the ability to manage the processes and procedures in the business and to give our customers the best service we can.

“It formalises what we do and makes us think about how we deal with customers, criticism and change.”

Brett’s Transport - founded in 1933 - employs 180 staff, mainly drivers, and has a fleet of more than 80 articulated lorries and massive warehouses in Guyhirn which include one built in 2012 to replace a rented facility in Peterborough.

Its core business involves the transport of ambient (room temperature) food - which arrives at its warehouses from all over Europe - to supermarket distribution centres, manufacturers and cash and carrys.

The company’s success story has seen the combined turnover of Bretts Transport and Bretts Storage rise from £14.5m two years ago to £17m this year.

Mr Jackson said: “Our recent investment in our distribution centre, which included building the new 80,000sq ft warehouse, came to £3m.”
