BRITISH Telecom admitted today water damage could have affected up to 1,000 phone lines in March.
The company was responding to criticism that it had told some customers service could take up to six days to be fully restored.
Seven Stars pub landlord Tristan Casson said that “BT is still saying a fault is outstanding and won’t be completed until Tuesday. We are to expect ‘intermittent service’.”
A weekend press officer for BT told the Cambs Times that the fault in March had been caused by water damage to a major cable from the exchange.
“It has impacted up to 1,000 lines, although we had ‘only’ had 270 reported faults,” said the spokesman,
“Engineers have worked flat out to remove the old cable, run a new cable through and joint each customer back onto it one by one.
“We have restored service to the majority of customers but are still working through re-tests in case of residual faults such as cross lines.”
