Baker Fiona McDuff paid a unique tribute to the Tour de France this week with a special themed cake.

Her ambitious creation paid homage to the famous polka dot jersey awarded to the tour’s ‘King of the Mountains’ – the rider who accrues the best time when the cyclists heads into the mountains of France.

In all, Fiona cracked 25 eggs and took two full days to complete the two-tier chocolate cake – which has been bought by a cycling enthusiast to he celebrate his birthday.

Fiona, from Ely, said the cake weighs in at about four kilograms – or almost nine pounds.

She added: “The hardest part was making the cyclist for the top. That alone was a good few hours of work with polymer clay.”

The Tour de France set off from Cambridge on its way into London on Monday with thousands of people, including Fiona, descending on the city to welcome the riders.

Fiona, a former scientist working for Cancer Research, won the inaugural Cambridge Bake Off in 2013 and went on to open a pop-up shop in Ely in the run up to last Christmas.

She now runs Fiona Patissiere – baking bespoke cakes and pastries to order. Her macarons are available to buy in Allgoods of Ely.
